KNYSNA ARTS EXPERIENCE (article first published : 2003-09-18)

All tastes and every age will be catered for at the 2003 Knysna Arts Experience, which runs from September 26 to October 5 at various venues along the beautiful stretch of Garden Route from Sedgefield to Plettenburg Bay.

Focusing on the lighter side, Pappasitos and Crabs Creek - two popular restaurants and late night spots - will be centres of much of the action. Pappasitos, one of the festival's chief sponsors, has lined up all-day programmes designed to appeal to families, along with scintillating evening shows.

The Pappasitos Intercape fun bus - a topless double-decker number will leave the town centre for Knysna Heads with its breathtaking views, then wind down the hill to Brenton beach for a day in the sun. There a DJ will be on hand to make sure everyone has fun, while kiddies' play areas, sandcastle building competitions, cookery demos, performances from local choirs and picnic baskets packed with goodies are all on the action-packed menu.

Those with hearty appetites will enjoy the menu at Pappasitos while lighter meals will be offered at Pappas Kitchen on the upper deck. As sun sets, it will be tme for sundowners as visitors plan their evening programmes.

Among the artistes ready to rock are the Village People, Francisca Blasich, Irit Noble and Stuart Taylor, all of whom will be strutting their stuff at Crabs Creek and Pappasitos. Essential viewing is the show Can't Stop the Music, a tribute to the Village People which is set to dazzle audiences at Crabs Creek while Francisca, fresh from the Idols competition, will be singing for her fans.

Irit needs no introduction to Cape Town audiences, and local Knysna talent will be on show. Cool jazz will offer mellow music at these venues.

Last - but certainly not least if you are an over-30 wannabe who always-wanted -to- perform-but-never-did closet star, the Knysna festival's own Mamma and Pappa Idols competition have vouchers worth R17,500 and R2 500.
