FESTIVAL - HILTON ARTS (article first published : 1999-07-21)

With scheduling and prices available from August 1 and advance booking forms to be printed in the Sunday Tribune on August 15 and the Witness on August 16, the Hilton Arts Festival is on track for a bumper event. Booking opens at Computicket on August 31.

The Hilton Arts Festival runs from September 17 to 19 at Hilton College outside Pietermaritzburg. Productions verbally confirmed at the time of going to press include top productions on the Main Festival such as the KZN premiére of Rory Rootenberg and Ian von Memerty’s Cadenza X-Trav (sequel to the award-winning Cadenza); The Well Being with Andrew Buckland, Lionel Newton and Lara Foot Newton, as well as the Take-Away Shakespeare Company’s production of Antony & Cleopatra with Sean Taylor and Jana Cilliers.

There will be performances by Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company, Cutt Glass, Ellis Pearson and Bheki Mkhwane’s Kaboom and Milestones to the Millennium, the highly popular rock and roll band from Cape Town. As the Cookie Crumbles (see review under “Festivals” on this website) is a delightful one-woman show which will particularly delight those who have lived in Kenya. John Vlismas and Gilda Blacher present a joint stand-up comedy show, John’s from Mars, Gilda’s from Venus and they will also appear on the Fringe.

The Fringe Festival offers David Butler in Touch of Madness adapted from the writings of Herman Charles Bosman, Liverspread, Cold Stone Jug (Hilton College Production). Reviews appear on this website for Rajesh Gopie’s Out of Bounds, Greig Coetzee’s White Men with Weapons and Intercourses with Susan Monteregge. Other productions include Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert’s The Revenge of the Pink Panties, Sitting Around the Fire directed by Bheki Mkhwane, Antoinette Pienaar in Johanna, Naughty Noel with Garth Anderson and with Ben Voss and John van de Ruit. Horn Of Plenty is a multi-media presentation by Chris Mann of poetry, singing, painting, slides and music.

For music lovers, the focus is on the harp in Celtic Reflections, the Hilton College Choir will perform a Latin Mass setting, there will be a piano recital by Chris Duigan and a performance by the St Mary’s DSG Choir. Guitar maestro Tony Cox presents Grace and Thunder with drummer/percussionist Barry van Zyl. Popular Pietermaritzburg entertainer Ian Caldwell hosts Caldwell Recalls and children’s entertainment will be offered by Creative Madness as well as Andrew Godbold.

Workshops will be conducted by Tony Cox (guitar), Garth Anderson (From Page to Stage), Ellis Pearson (Imagine That!) and Bheki Mkwane (Yebo!!). The Amphitheatre will host the KZN Youth Orchestra as well as Ellis, Bheki and Madala Kunene! The Open Stage will be attached to a new section of the craft market, specifically aimed at and partially run by teenagers and there will be a book fair.
