DOLPHIN COAST UMDWEBO (article first published : 2003-04-9)

The Dolphin Coast Umdwebo is a celebration of the art of fine living festival that will take place in and around the coastal town of Ballito on KZN’s scenic Dolphin Coast north of Durban.

“Umdwebo” is isiZulu for “to create art” or to “underline something beautiful”. This concept was born to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Ballito and to attract well-read, well-travelled, engaging and outgoing people who appreciate the finer things in life.

A combined project between Swank Projects, KwaDukuza Municipality and the KwaDukuza-Dolphin Coast Publicity Association Umdwebo will utilise the Municipality’s services and infrastructure. This means that the Dolphin Coast will be in pristine condition to impress even the most discerning visitor.

The five-day The Dolphin Coast Umdwebo will take place from July 8 to 12 and it is projected as an annual event, with more elements to be added over the next couple of years.

The festival aims to create a world class ‘art of living’ festival on the Dolphin Coast and to generate high profile publicity for the Dolphin Coast. By celebrating the arts, the event aims to attract people who are selective and enjoy refined and inspirational events. It will boost the local economy by utilising the support of local businesses, services and venues.

The official opening will take place at Zimbali Lodge on July 8. This will be followed by an extensive festival programme which includes an art exhibition at Ballito Manor (Tickets R85); tours of of the sights and the sounds of the Dolphin Coast and Conservation walks and, for golfers, Golf Days at Umhlali and Zimbali Country clubs.

Special events include The Ladies That Lunch – a colonial “Mad Hatter’s affair at The Kingdom on July 9 (Tickets R225) – a dramatic large hat is obligatory attire! That evening there will be a Beach Picnic by Candlelight on Salmon Bay Beach. Described as “a project in white”, those attending are asked to wear white (Tickets R225). A Cognac and cigar tasting will be held at Zimbali Country in the Club Members Bar on July 10 (Tickets R325).

July 11 will feature an Opera Concert at The Boathouse with well-known opera singer Mimi Coertse and the Black Tie Ensemble (Tickets R315). As it will be full moon on July 12, the organisers have come up with the innovative idea of a Sans Shoes Gala on the Salt Rock beach. The dress is black tie and evening gowns and shoes can be deposited for safe-keeping once the welcoming red carpet meets the sand! (Tickets R425).
