OUDTSHOORN YOUTH FESTIVAL (article first published : 2002-11-9)

The first Oudtshoorn International Youth Festival and Expo will take place in the bustling town of Oudtshoorn in the Southern Cape region from July 3 to 12, 2003. Thereafter it will be hosted every year during South Africa's July school holidays, a period which coincides with holidays in most countries.

The Festival will be divided into two parts. The first section taking place from July 3 to 7will focus on high school learners aged 13 to 18. This will be followed by the second part of the festival from July 8 to 12 which will be devoted to students at tertiary institutions and young working people of 18 and older.

The Festival programme will consist of various activities which can be divided into five main categories: sport, arts and culture, social issues, entrepreneurship and career counselling. There are many youth gatherings which concentrate on a single type of sport or a specific art form but few which combine different disciplines to achieve a holistic balance.

The Festival will achieve this balance by hosting a wide variety of competitive and non-competitive events. The programme will offer entertainment for everyone and give young people the opportunity to showcase their talents and abilities.

Through a number of forums, the Festival will enable young people to address issues which affect them. Thus the Festival will act as a mouthpiece for the youth's sentiments about a variety of subjects.

The Festival is the ideal platform to acknowledge the talent and dedication of young achievers and those involved with youth development. The event also offers excellent networking opportunities for government bodies, NGOs, civil society organisations and individuals with an interest in youth matters.
