GRAHAMSTOWN - VISUAL ART (article first published : 1999-07-8)

African Mysticism is the name of an exhibition running at the Dakawa Art and Craft Community Centre in Froude Street, Grahamstown, as part of the 1999 Standard Bank National Arts Festival. The exhibition features the work of Mawetu Janda who is showing a wide variety of paintings and charcoal drawings and sculptured pieces by Thabo Manetsi. Both artists are students at Fort Hare University and are both concerned with spirituality in African culture.

Thabo Manetsi is the name to watch he has a clear vision and reproduces it efficiently in his work. Using the sturdy palm sheath as his base, he creates fantastical figures some covered in hide, some with wire, others with painted images. All are different, fascinating and unique. The exhibition is worth a visit - its open from 09h00 to 17h00 daily.
