GREEN MAMBA (article first published : 2002-08-3)

After taking this year’s Grahamstown National Arts Festival by storm, Green Mamba returns to KZN for the month of September. The show will enjoy a local season in Durban and will also appear at the Hilton Festival.

Described by Caroline Smart in artSMart as, “Hilarious, clever, incisive and bang up to date” (see full review in Festival pages), Green Mamba is a venomous satirical comedy, taking a hilarious look at the trials and tribulations of life in the new South Africa.

Through a series of 15 ingenious sketches, FNB Vita award winners Ben Voss and John van de Ruit take the audience on a sidesplitting journey through a day in the life of this weird and wonderful country. From an in-depth study of the refined art of car-guarding, to a savage send up of the Big Brother Household, the humour runs thick and fast culminating in the most enthralling horserace ever seen on a South African stage!

Green Mamba is directed by Greig Coetzee (White Men With Weapons, Breasts, etc) and written by John van de Ruit and Ben Voss, and in the words of the NAF Festival newspaper Cue: “The audience loved this un PC slice of South African life!”

Green Mamba will run at the Square Space Theatre (UND) from September 2 to 29. Performances Tuesday to Saturday at 19h30 and Sundays at 18h30.
