ONE NIGHT STAND (article first published : 2002-07-3)

Michelle Driman’s creative abilities are pushed to the limit in her own one-woman play One Man Stand which she has written and directed. This multi-talented artist is currently performing at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Stuck for three months in a hospital after a car accident, a young girl relives the circumstances surrounding her bad ordeal one night after going to the theatre with her “best friend.”

In a constant diatribe at her own cynicism, the character scolds at any and every subject - falling back on the constant refrain of each generation to blame the one before it. A cry for acceptance and understanding is symbolised by the fact that the plaster of paris covering her one leg is expected to be removed the following day. The joy of the “tomorrow” in her life allows her to nurture her anger of things gone by.

Michelle Driman is a watchable performer. She makes stunning eye contact and uses this skill well. Her diction and vocal presentation is impeccable. Considering Driman’s talent and commitment as an actress, this Durban-based performer should now consider stepping back to allow someone else to direct her. This will allow her to develop further as she is too close to her own material.

Driman could have developed the twist more strongly or even have expanded it a little but on the whole, a creative and promising play. - Thomie Holtzhausen
