HEARTLANDS BY CHRIS MANN (article first published : 2002-06-17)

Well-known poet and writer Chris Mann will launch his new book Heartlands at this year's National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

“Our heartlands are felt encounters with places that resonate in our memories,” says Chris Mann. “Such places, their people, plants and animals, contribute much to the meaning we make and find in our lives.”

Chris Mann's new book brings a wide variety of “heartlands” to life. His poems invite readers to discover the numerous places of significance in their own lives. “Exploring such heartlands helps us to create and nurture our identities as individuals,” adds Chris whose recent books include South Africans and The Horn of Plenty.

Known to stage and cinema audiences throughout the world, actress Janet Suzman returns to her former homeland to take the lead in a series of shows based on Heartlands. A highly skilled performer, she has won Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her impressive and wide-ranging roles. She is also an Honorary Associate of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a patron of the Market Theatre.

Huge images by artist Julia Skeen are projected onto a screen which will be slung from the rafters of the Grahamstown cathedral. The images incorporate the words of the poems which are performed by Janet Suzman and the author.

Live original music by composer Christopher Cockburn provides a moving setting for the performance. The shows are on June 30 and July 2 in the Cathedral. Booking is through Computicket.

Heartlands can be seen at Kwasuka Theatre on July 6 and 7 at 19h00. In order to allow a wider audience to enjoy the performance of Janet Suzman, tickets will be on a Pay What You Can Afford basis (minimum R30). Phone Kwasuka Theatre on 031 309-2236.
