INDABA FOR FESTIVAL (article first published : 2002-06-10)

Composers and others interested in contemporary music will have the opportunity to participate in a composers' Indaba before and during this year's National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Following the success of the first New Music Indaba at last year's Festival, the organisers decided to add another section to the Indaba, namely a workshop for composers and people interested in new music. The International Composers' Indaba South Africa (ICISA) will be held from June 24 to July 6 under the auspices of NewMusicSA.

Established composers from the Netherlands (Theo Lovendie and Martijn Padding), USA (John McGuire) and South Africa, will conduct working sessions with participants as well as observers. Lectures and recitals of compositions created at the Indaba will take place, as well as concerts featuring new music by soloists and ensembles from South Africa and Europe.

The Insomnio Ensemble of the Netherlands will attend the Indaba especially for this purpose. This Ensemble will also give a recital at UNISA in Pretoria on July 7.

ICISA is made possible by the Embassy of the Netherlands in South Africa, the Gaudeamus Foundation for Contemporary Music in Amsterdam, NewMusicSA and MCCOSA - The Music Communication Centre of Southern Africa. The organisers plan to make this workshop an annual event.

Enquiries on ICISA can be directed to MCCOSA, PO Box 1010, Auckland Park 2006 South Africa or e-mail: mccosa@ibi.co.za or by phone on 011 642-2995.
