ZANZIBAR FESTIVAL (article first published : 2002-06-10)

Zanzibar's spectacular annual Festival of the Dhow Countries, takes place in historic venues along the waterfront of Stone Town from June 28 to July 13. Now in its fifth year, the festival has grown from strength to strength since its inauguration as the Zanzibar International Film Festival in 1998. It has already gained the reputation as "East Africa's premier cultural event".

The very name Zanzibar conjures up images of 1001 Nights, exotic spices and Arab traders. Long has the mighty dhow plied its way back and forth across the Indian Ocean, bringing together the eclectic mix of peoples who now inhabit these beautiful equatorial islands. True to its reputation, Zanzibar languishes in a tropical paradise of coral reefs and palm-fringed beaches. Historic Stone Town, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a veritable labyrinth of narrow winding streets, steeped in the rich cultural and architectural mix of its African, Arabian and Indian populations.

The Festival of the Dhow Countries screens over 100 films, inside the magnificent House of Wonders during the daytime and more on the Main Screen - Amphitheatre in the Old Fort. The emotive and heartbreaking rendition of Patrice Emery Lumumba's gripping life story will be shown on June 28. Lumumba is directed by Haitian, Raoul Peck, this year's Festival guest of honour.
