PINK LOERIE FESTIVAL (article first published : 2002-05-21)

Pink Loerie Promotions (Pty) Ltd strives to produce a five-day carnival that includes a performing arts, visual arts, music and special events programme focused on the pink theme. This gay carnival is aimed at attracting visitors to Knysna.

The Carnival kicks off with the It’s OUTrageous Party, the official opening party that takes the form of a variety concert to showcase the objectives of the Carnival and the main Carnival acts. The Carnival includes live performances by many of South Africa’s most celebrated artists as well as a few newcomers: Amanda Strydom in All of me; Cres Pretorius –Selle ou Storie (“Dinner for One” with a twist); The Cooky Cups - Chrystal Chandelier, Tilly Tittelation and Tina Twister in Fruiti Tuti; Elzabé Zietsman in Elzabé Zietsman In Cabaret; Heidi Mollentze, Neels Clasen and Karen Wessels in You Can’t Keep A Good Love Down; Jacques Batista In Surviving Scarlet Raven; Lizz Meiring in Elke Ander Duim ‘N Dame; Peter Hayes in The Fence; Rocco de Villiers in Roctails; and Rory Rootenberg in Highlights!!. Noa Tylo can be seen nightly at Al’s Dance Club.

Two innovative and interesting movies Gaudi Afternoon and Head On will be shown twice daily. The Old Gaol hosts an evening with live performances by jazz artists Wendy Dewberry and Mel Schroeder on Friday night and Wendy Dewberry again on Saturday night.

The Miles Of Smiles Street Parade will no doubt draw thousands more participants and spectators than it did in its inception year. The organisers hope that this will be a true community event that everyone, whatever their sexual orientation, can enjoy. Camp, queer, courageous, wild, weird, wonderful … whatever – this is an opportunity for all to join in a spectacular celebration. Whether on foot or by motorised float, join the procession or watch as it passes through the streets.

Saturday culminates in a dance party for all. The final-night party will be a visual and musical feast at Al’s Dance Club with sensational dj Stuart Hillary from Therapy, Gauteng. The ladies will also be spoilt for choice with female djs.

The festival ends on Sunday May 26 with The Beyond Eden Women’s Festival Of Song, Music & Art will be held at the Old Coach House, also the venue for the Big Brunch. Say your farewells to new friends and old, and to the host town, at the magnificent Old Coach House, Harkerville on Sunday morning at an event designed to celebrate women.
