THE NOT FESTIVAL (article first published : 2002-05-11)

The sixth NOT the Grahamstown Festival (now known as the NOT festival) – the annual theatre showcase previewing the latest in innovative performing arts - will be held at Durban High School in St Thomas Road on Durban’s Berea from June 20 to 23.

There is still space for participants – so anyone with a new and exciting piece of theatre, dance, music, opera, drama, comedy or dance and want to stage it at the festival should contact Aldo Brincat on 031 764-1647.

NOT the Grahamstown Festival will combine an eclectic line-up of theatrical productions and visual arts to give local audiences a sense of festival spirit prior to one of the country’s premiere arts and culture festivals – the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown,” said NOT festival director Aldo Brincat.

“The face of festivals nationally has changed somewhat since we initiated the NOT the Grahamstown Festival six years ago,” said the festival’s Illa Thompson. “Now the landscape is very different with various major festivals sharing the limelight with the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. Festivals have become an ever-crucial forum for the staging of works, selling of crafts and sharing of ideas. In keeping with this transformation, we are no longer only staging shows en-route to Grahamstown, but also innovative works that form part of the current festival circuit,” she said.

Another festival tradition is the popular open forum after each production allowing audiences an opportunity to interact with the performers in a question and answer session at the close of every show. The NOT festival is being staged in conjunction with Durban High School, an institution that has established a fine reputation for its cultural activities and projects and has been the festival’s host since its inception. The school is providing the venue and infrastructure for the festival.

This year, the NOT festival will also host the first festival of original theatre pieces created by high school learners as an important part of the NOT festival
