GRAHAMSTOWN - DANCE (article first published : 1999-07-5)

With assistance from the National Arts Council, Durban’s innovative Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company presents a show to delight all ages at the 1999 Standard Bank National Arts Festival. Chasing Tales is a fantastical, magical ballet and storytelling show full of delightful surprises and new ideas which premiered at the Playhouse in Durban last festive season.

Directed by Mark Hawkins and choreographed by David Gouldie it opens in the local library where a highly respected Sangoma is preparing a lecture on bone-throwing. She’s found herself locked in for the night, her dog has mixed up her throwing bones with the bones of a dinosaur on exhibition and she’s trying to sort out the muddle. Her escape spell requires specific ingredients and none of them are readily available in the middle of the night, let alone in her incarcerated position. Then Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother appears. Dressed in outrageous garb with vast fluffy slippers, she’s hardly the conventional idea of a fairy godmother. This is only the beginning!

The cast includes Norraine Swanby and Smily Kunene as the fairy godmother and the sangoma with David Gouldie, Mary-Ann de Wet, Catherine Royce, Manie Irving, Cheryl Burger, Nicole McCreedy and Dean Bennewith. Greg King, who conceived the story which was scripted by Nick Warren, has designed a delightful set and masks for this fun show which is set to an original score by Renè Veldsman with additional music by Dawn Thomson and theme song lyrics by Barry Thomson.
