HILTON ARTS (article first published : 2001-09-16)

The Natal Witness Hilton Arts Festival, the annual premier KZN performing arts showcase, takes place at the beautiful Hilton College over the Heritage Day long weekend. There are more than 50 different shows to choose from, all featuring the cream of the performing arts available nationally.

This year, the festival falls over a long weekend so there is no need to rush back home early on Sunday as Monday is a public holiday. With this in mind, many of the top shows have been scheduled for the Sunday programme. There’s the engaging drama blending cruel observations with high comedy Life x 3; the wonderful, original and quirky three-hander Hat Trick featuring Charmaine Weir Smith, Thomas Hall and Denise Stock, and White Men in Buckets - a poignant and funny look at life as a conscript in the navy.

For those whose enjoy truly masterful and inspiring original music, don't miss the acclaimed Aquarian Quartet featuring Tony Cox, Steve Newman, Greg Georgiades and Syd Kitchen. End Sunday night with Offbeat Broadway, a revue featuring favourite hits from the musicals - as you have never heard them before - featuring Suanne Braun, Paul du Toit and Anton Luitingh.

Lovers of the classics can look forward to a whole music revival programme entitled The Classic Experience featuring a host of much-loved classical musicians. The Nedbank Syfrets Private Banking Flagship Production is Fiona Coyne's eagerly-awaited Dearly Beloved. There is an extra show - due to popular demand - of Cape Flats on Friday night.
