CLASSIC EXPERIENCE (article first published : 2001-09-13)

KZN-based concert entrepreneurs Music Revival will present the Classic Experience, seven enticing music recitals in one weekend during the Hilton Arts Festival running from September 21 to 23.

These not-to-be missed events feature a line-up of top artists performing in the newly renovated Hilton College Chapel. Programmes feature both popular and rarely-performed classical works. Leading artists appearing include piano duo, Lara Jones and Philipp Maier; the gifted Welsh harpist Linor Griffith; well-known duo Paul van Zuilenberg (trumpet) and Kobus du Plooy (organ); the highly popular Kerimov Trio; Durban-based Baroque 2000 Ensemble; and the supercharged young American clarinettist, Diana Bures.

September 21: at 20h00, prominent Durban pianist Lara Jones currently based in Cologne teams with Phillip Maier for a programme of four-hand piano music built around Schubert's sublime Fantasy in F minor.

September 22: at 12h00 Welsh harpist, Harpist Linor Griffith plays a varied programme of harp classics, offering audiences the rare experience to hear this superb musician conjuring a world of sound beyond expectation. This is an opportunity not to be missed. Adding a regal note to this festival Paul van Zuilenberg (trumpet) and Kobus du Ploy (organ) present a celebratory programme of music from Baroque composers Henry Purcell, JS Bach and Georg Phillip Telemann at 14h00. At 20h00, the Kerimov Trio - Russian musicians Elena Kerimova (violin) and Boris Kerimov (cello) and Christopher Duigan (piano) - perform an 80-minute programme featuring solo and ensemble pieces including Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suite No.4, the Trio in G K.564 by Mozart, as well as music by Rachmaninov, Arvo Pärt and the fiery Polonaise for cello and piano by Chopin.

Ensemble. This mid-day concert features music by Georges Mussat, Jean-Baptiste Lully and the popular Italian Antonio Vivaldi. At 14h00, Clarinet Centre Stage with Diana Bures follows at 14h00, with clarinettist Diana Bures as the featured artist with the Renaissance String Quartet. They are set to dazzle audiences with one of the finest showpieces written for the instrument; the radiant and effervescent Clarinet Quintet (1815) by Carl Maria von Weber. This mood of exuberance is extended when she is joined by Todor Balkandjiev (bassoon ) and Christopher Duigan (piano) to perform music by Felix Mendelssohn and CPE Bach, son of the famous JS Bach. The Kerimov Trio and Friends return at 16h00 to close the series with a programme featuring Franz Schubert's much -loved Trout Quintet. Catch this opportunity to hear Schubert's perfect masterpiece in full colour and get hooked!
