BOOK FOR HILTON (article first published : 2001-08-31)

Booking for this year’s The Natal Witness Hilton Arts Festival - which takes place at Hilton College on September 21, 22, 23 is now open and comprehensive booking kits are available.

As has become tradition, the festival will promise a line-up of impressive drama, dance and cabaret in a programme packed with some of the most highly sought-after theatre productions in the country. Many of the productions are sourced at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July, ensuring that Hilton Festival patrons get a chance to see the “pick of the Fest” less than two months after the close of the premier festival in the Eastern Cape.

Among the main festival highlights this year are the Nedbank Syfrets Private Baking Flagship production of Fiona Coyne’s Dearly Beloved – a bold, comic moving scrutiny of love and marriage. Written by Fiona Coyne and directed by Roy Sargeant (the team who created the Vita Award winning Glass Roots last year), this highly acclaimed, bold, original new production was the talk of the town in Grahamstown.*

Another eagerly-awaited drama is the newest piece from Andrew Buckland. Makana – the missing lynx*: Who was he? What was he? Was he a selfless leader? A mystic God? A power hungry manipulative schemer? An early pop idol? This innovative two hander features Andrew Buckland and Bheki Mkhwane with direction by Janet Buckland.

Comedian Marc Lottering presents From the Cape Flats with Love. His show – nominated for seven Vita awards, consistently attracts full houses. Marc portrays several characters – all unmistakably from Cape Town. Direction is by David Kramer.

Heralded as one of the best plays to be seen in SA for years – Life x 3 – is written by Yasmina Reza, directed by Alan Swerdlow and features Fiona Ramsay and Graham Hopkins. The play blends cruel observations with high comedy in a hilarious and poignant examination of our most personal intimacies and private longings.

The extensive music line-up includes the awesome Aquarian Quartet featuring the glorious music of acoustic guitarists Steve Newman, Tony Cox, Syd Kitchen and Greg Georgiades. Anthony Stonier, Carol Trench and Evan Roberts feature in the slick and witty revue Let’s Misbehave*, and Paul du Toit, Anton Luitingh and Suanne Braun in the delicious light hearted look at the much loved musicals in Off Beat Broadway*. Charl van Heyningen features in La Vita e Bella/Life is Beautiful - a production designed by Ian von Memerty with Dawid Boverhoff (who most recently performed with Rory Rootenberg) on piano.

There is a strong classical music focus this year with a eight concert series unprecedented in variety and substance featuring among others - piano duo Lara Jones and Philipp Maier, harpist Linor Griffith; trumpet and organ: Paul van Zuilenberg and Kobus du Plooy.

Besides the uplifting theatre events, there are a number of other activities and things to do at the festival – there’s an open stage for performers to strut their stuff before genuine theatre-lovers; there’s live entertainment in the food hall; a quality craft market; a fascinating and comprehensive book-fair and a an extensive food arena.

Booking kits are available from selected SPAR Stores in KZN and information will appear in the Natal Witness. Kits can also be collected from Exclusive Books (La Lucia and Pavilion) and Adams in Musgrave Centre.

It is prudent to book your accommodation early at one of the many B&Bs and hotels in the area. Information on booking and accommodation on (033) 343-0126 or visit www.hilton.kzn.school.za/artsfest
