GRAHAMSTOWN, MONDAY JULY 2 (article first published : 2001-07-2)

With the weekenders and daily trippers departed, the serious Festival followers settle down for the week ahead. The weatherís kinder today and the sun is shining although there is a fairly chill wind blowing.

Yesterday, there was a media function when Festival committee chairman Mannie Manim gave us the lowdown of where the Festival stands at the moment. (See separate story)

Yesterday evening, I popped in to see Dennis Rubinís The Rope which I missed when it first performed in Durban at Not the Grahamstown Festival. (Review to be posted in Drama shortly). On the cards today are Offbeat Broadway which played the Royal Hotelís Backstage earlier this year, Ben Vossís first play Menís Night directed by Greig Coetzee and the University of Natal Durbanís student theatre production Left Luggage. Watch out for the reviews Ė the first will be in Music and the latter two in Drama.

Upstairs in the Victoria complex, there is a marvelous exhibition of Special Art, works by physically or mentally handicapped children. Of particular note are a several beautifully made waistcoats made by youngsters who only have the use of one hand.

By the way, I forgot to mention in my report about Fiona Coyneís new play Dearly Beloved that the showís stage manager is Murray Angus-Leppan Ė a former drama student at University of Natal - who sends his regards to anyone who remembers him. Itís a Baxter Theatre Centre production so anyone wanting to reach him, should contact the theatre in Cape Town.
