GRAHAMSTOWN, THURSDAY JUNE 31 (article first published : 2001-06-30)

Today’s a three-layer day – fast developing into a four-layer! (See June 29 report) We were all lulled into a sense of false security when the sun rose warm and bright, there was no wind and it looked as if we wouldn’t have to cart round coats, gloves, hats etc. By 12h00 we were proved wrong as the temperature dropped and the wind set in and there are ominous dark clouds on the horizon.

However, that hasn’t dampened Festival spirits, or mine for that matter! Last night I saw 2 Pianos 4 Hands with Kevin Feather and Tobie Cronjé, what a joyous surprise to discover that the latter is a fine accomplished pianist. (Review in Music).

Yesterday’s highlight was the Walter Oltmann exhibition in the Monument’s main gallery. For my money, this is the most exciting exhibition I’ve yet seen from a visual arts winner of the Young Artist award. (See review in Visual Arts)

Today I have seen Dearly Beloved, Fiona Coyne’s new drama which features Lara Bye, a former University of Natal Durban drama student, and Makana in which Durban’s own Bheki Mkwane (usually working with Ellis Pearson but that’s in another production) plays the title role. (these reviews will be posted shortly.

Just bumped into the cast of Seeing Red, Greig Coetzee’s new play which recently played the Playhouse Drama. They opened last night after a few technical problems but seem right on track to make a good impression on this year’s festival.
