GRAHAMSTOWN – VISUAL ART (article first published : 1999-06-29)

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Standard Bank National Arts Festival as well as the 21st anniversary of the Standard Bank African Art Collection. The event will be celebrated with the world premiere of an exhibition entitledTreasures.

A major national asset, the Standard Bank’s African art collection consists of over 3 600 pieces from three regions of the continent - west, central and south - and is jointly owned by Standard Bank and the University of the Witwatersrand. On show in Treasures will be some of the rarest and most special pieces that demonstrate the broad spectrum of African art making - from sculpture to beadwork, historical to contemporary. The exhibition is also an important document in the changing attitudes towards collecting that have occurred over the last few years.

For many not living in Gauteng this may be the first time one of the greatest Southern African collections in the world may be viewed.
