FESTIVAL OF HERE & NOW (article first published : 2001-06-20)

This message is for performers who sometimes feel bored with what Durban playwrights are offering? For playwrights who feel as if their own work is sometimes direction-less, random or irrelevant? For those who that the genre of theatre in general hasn’t changed for the last decade?

“If the answer is “yes” to any (if not all) of the above then you are invited to participate in an exciting medium to long term project,” says actor Aldo Brincat. “We want to invite you to conceptualise, write and stage a short play (one or two handers preferably) at our new festival.”

The Festival of the Here & Now! takes place at Kwasuka Theatre from November 6 to14.

“We will be meeting very soon just to discuss this concept and to see who is interested,” says Aldo. “We want to discuss new ideas and new concepts. To thrash out new and exciting South African stories and thoughts that can make great New South African theatre. To talk about the initial ideas before getting to final draft when it is sometimes too late. Talking Before Writing. We want new exciting work that is sophisticated and challenging to all our South African audiences. We want fresh voices to emerge. Voices that might stand a chance to be invited overseas and applauded as cutting edge and pertinent.”

In the long term, the Festival team will support the best of new ideas and see them to fruition on a national level in the year to come.

A get-together of all interested parties will take place on June 21 at 18h00 at Legends, Musgrave. To confirm your attendance, phone Aldo on (031) 654-1674.
