YOUNG ENTERTAINMENT (article first published : 2001-04-20)

The 2001 KwaZulu-Natal Schools’ Festival will run on the University of Natal Durban Campus as well as the Playhouse and Elizabeth Sneddon Theatres on April 20 and 21. An estimated 600 delegates from more than 32 schools will attend the two-day event sponsored by First National Bank.

True to its reputation for providing a mini arts festival jam-packed with the latest and best on the South African arts scene, this year’s schools festival is guaranteed to enthral pupils and teachers alike.

The festival offers eight theatre productions, 13 workshops and three lectures and the keynote address will be given by the multi-talented Andrew Buckland whose one man show Between the Teeth also features on the programme.

Jay Pather, last year’s FNB Award winner for Best Choreography, offers Neworks (currently running at the Square Space Theatre) presented by Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre while Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company will perform Beyond the Limit: Facing South choreographed by Lliane Loots with music by Busi Mhlongo and Phillip Glass.

Aldo Brincat and Michael Gritten will perform their hilarious King Kong and the physical comedy Skadonk! features the unique talents of Ellis Pearson and Bheki Mkhwane. Director Garth Andersen and the Actors Co-Operative present The Lunatic, the Lover and the Poet: Close Encounters of the Shakespearean Kind.

In addition to the theatre productions delegates will also have the opportunity to explore their own creativity in a range of professionally facilitated workshops while the three lectures will look at subliminal advertising, creative writing and the sophistry involved in constructing a good argument.
