GRAHAMSTOWN FOUNDATION (article first published : 2001-04-1)

If the response of learners and teachers who attended this year's Western Cape Schools' Festival was anything to go by the 2001 programme of schools' festivals again offers a festive programme that is both educational and exhilarating.

The annual programme of nine schools' festivals presented in eight provinces is set up and managed by the Grahamstown Foundation. In collaboration with First National Bank, Standard Bank and SASOL, the programme will reach an estimated 6,000 learners in 2001. In July alone, 1,000 thousands learners will descend on Grahamstown to attend the Standard Bank National Schools' Festival for grade 12 learners.

In addition to the shows, delegates to one of the schools' festivals have a chance to take part in numerous workshops where they will learn the basics of mime, set-design, physical comedy and how to stage and direct a play. They also get access to an impressive variety of work by current, cutting-edge South African artists.

The call is out to English and drama teachers to start organising and raising money for interested grade 11 learners to attend the schools' festival in their province. Dates for the KZN event are April 20 and 21.

More details from Lily May at the Grahamstown Foundation at (046) 603-1107.
