URGENT CALL FOR SUPPORT (article first published : 2001-02-19)

Calling concerned artists of all disciplines and those who believe in the future of the arts in KZN!

“The performing arts community in KZN wants to respond to The Playhouse Company's renewed state of crisis with the revelation of serious allegations of racism and bigotry leveled against executive members of the Playhouse Company Board,” explains a press release from arts organisations Publicity Matters and Cultural Radius. “This has national implications with the Chairman of the Playhouse Board also being one of six representatives appointed to the new National Lottery distribution agency”.

The document continues as follows:

“We propose the arts community mobilise to support the call for

1. An immediate and public investigation into the recent allegations concerning the conduct of the Executive Committee of the Playhouse Company Board;

2. The publication of the outcome of the forensic audit into the KwaZulu Natal Arts and Culture Council;

3. The serious re-consideration of Edmund Radebe as a representative to be appointed to the new National Lottery Distribution Agency, to allocate money to arts projects.”

A silent public demonstration of solidarity is planned to take place on the steps of the Durban City Hall at 13h15 on Wednesday. February 21, the venue for the regular Durban Arts free lunch hour music concert. At 13h30 a representative of the group aims to present a memorandum to the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, Dr Ngubane, or his nominated official.

“We have assured the Honourable Minister of our serious intent to participate in the processes of public debate responsibly, as is our democratic right,” the document continues. “We sincerely want the Playhouse Company to be a shining example of cultural excellence and diversity, and are looking to the Dr Ngubane to do all in his power to support our passion. We call on all concerned artists to participate in this process.”
