AWESOME AFRICA PROGRAMME (article first published : 2000-09-20)

The Awesome Africa Music Festival takes place at Shongweni Resources Reserve this weekend from September 22 to 24. There are two stages: Kingdom of the Zulu presented by The Independent on Saturday and the Castle Lager Shebeen presented by East Coast Road. The daily programme is as follows:

Friday, September 22 (Day 1): Festival Premiere @ Shongweni. 19h15 - Larry Long (USA) with children from eDamini School, Shongweni; 19h30 - Durban Black Drifters isicathamiya group; 19h45 –A Tribute To KZN Music Legends - Mayor Obed Mlaba's Musical Excellence Awards featuring Blondie Chaplin, Theo Bophela, Busi Mhlongo, Sandile Shange, Ricky Fataar, Steve Fataar, Neill Solomon, Sipho Gumede and Roger Lucey; 20h15 – Cheikh Lo from Senegal sponsored by the French Institute; 21h30 – Colin Offord & Matthew Doyle from Australia in BLACKMAN WHITEMAN, “a spiritual meeting from different backgrounds exploring the conflict and sadness of a convict past and highlighting our hopes for the future and our need for reconciliation”; .22h15 – TRO & Sideshow.

Saturday, September 23 (Day 2): 12h00 – Sunways with guests The Boyfriendz from Mamelodi; 14h00 – OHM with special guest Colin Offord from Australia; 16h00 - Three Oceans Collaboration with Bob Brozman, Takashi Hirayasu, Rene' Lacaille, Debashish and Subhashish Bhattacharya (USA/Japan/India/Reunion/SA); 18h20 - THC in collaboration with Sapien from USA with special guests Efrain Toro (Puerto Rico) and Barry van Zyl; 20h00 Angelique Kidjo from Benin, and 22h00 - Landscape Prayers and Modena City Ramblers (SA/Italy) with special guest Phil Manzanera (UK) - sponsored by Mr Price.

Sunday, September 24 (Day 3): 13h00 – Ismael “GTX” Xaba; 15h00 - Hugh Masekela; 18h00 – The Flames A Nostalgic Reunion with Blondie Chaplin, Ricky Fataar and Steve Fataar; 20h00 - Busi Mhlongo with special guest Brendan Jury, and 21h45 – Jimmy Dludlu.

CASTLE LAGER SHEBEEN presented by East Coast Radio.

Saturday, September 23 (Day 2): 13h00 - Chris Letcher and Larry Long (USA); 15h00 – Efrain Toro from Puerto Rico presenting Latin Percussion Workshop with Richard Ellis; 17h00 -"Kwaito Fusion Party with Bongo Maffin, Playaz + Mafenswa + DJ Siyanda with special guest Aki Nawaz from FunMental; 19h20 – Samite from Uganda with special guest Vusi Mkhize and 21h15 – Shamanzi from Nigeria. US, SA and USA with guests Nestor Kornblum and Michaele Averard in A Global Shamanic Journey.

Sunday, September 24 (Day 3):12h00 - Harmonic Encounters, healing with Sound and Overtone Chants from Nestor Kornblum and Michele Averard (Spain/UK); 14h00 - Professor Pitika Ntuli presents Apples & Snakes - African Renaissance Poetry. Roger Lucey presents Turning Point – a humorous look at a life spent fighting the system; 16h30 - Bob Brozman introduces Takashi Hirayasu, Rene' Lacaille, Debashish & Subhashish Bhattacharya and Mfiliseni Magubane (USA/Japan/India/Reunion/SA); 19h00 – Samite (Uganda) with special guest Vusi Mkhize, and 21h00 - Vusi Ximba.
