WOMEN’S ARTS FESTIVAL (article first published : 2000-08-8)

The Playhouse Complex will be buzzing with activity when the fourth annual South African Women’s Arts Festival mounted by Transnet and presented by the Playhouse Company takes place in the Playhouse complex from August 9 to 12.

There are over 20 performances to choose from including music, dance, drama, children’s theatre, cabaret and jazz as well as an art exhibition, arts and crafts, foyer displays and a conference. Tickets have been kept at a low price so that the festival can be open to a wider audience and certain events are free.

WEDNESDAY, August 9 (National Women's Day): 10h00 - Conference New Directions (Drama Theatre); 11h00 - children's theatre Cos' Cosu (Studio Theatre); 18h30 - Opening of Art Exhibition Identity Unveiled (Alhambra Room); 19h30 - Gala Concert (Opera Theatre) and 22h00 - Lucia Mthiyane and Brian Thusi Jazz Ensemble (Opera Bar).

THURSDAY, August 10: Open from 09h00 to 16h30 and again from 18h30 to 19h30 - Art Exhibition Identity Unveiled (Alhambra Room); 19h00 - Cabaret Desperately Seeking Prince Charming (Tudor Room) FREE; 19h30 - Drama Double Bill A Time of the Signs and Boxers & Bikinis (Sanlam Loft); 22h00 - Connie Miya and the Fasimba Band (Opera Bar) FREE.

FRIDAY, August 11: Open from 09h00 to 16h30 and again from 18h30 to 19h30 - Art Exhibition Identity Unveiled (Alhambra Room); 11h00 Children's Theatre Cos' Cosu (Studio Theatre) - SOLD OUT; 17h30 An Evening of Song (Grand Foyer); 19h00: Dance Programme (Drama Theatre); 19h30 - Drama Double Bill B: Head On and Diva (Sanlam Loft); 20h00 - An Evening of Poetry (Grand Foyer) – FREE; 21h30 - Cabaret Desperately Seeking Prince Charming (Tudor Room).

SATURDAY, August 12: Art ExhibitionIdentity Unveiled from 09h00 to 16h30 (closes exhibition); 11h30 - Drama Double Bill C Masquerade of Mannequins and Women of Africa (Studio); 11h30 - Drama Double Bill A Time of the Signs and Boxers & Bikinis (Sanlam Loft); 14h00 - Dance Programme (Drama Theatre); 18h30 - Drama Double Bill C Masquerade of Mannequins and Women of Africa (Studio); 19h00 - Dance Programme (Drama Theatre); 19h30 - Drama Double Bill B Head On and Diva (Sanlam Loft); 22h00 - Xolisa Gqoli and Jiqa Jazz Band (Opera Bar) FREE; 21h30 - Cabaret Desperately Seeking Prince Charming (Tudor Room )

There will be various arts and draft displays in the various foyers. Exhibitors will include an African patchwork group displaying quilts, pillows and bags as well as Zakhele Hand Creations, a group of rural women based in Port Shepstone, who offer hand-made paper. Works will be available for sale.
