GRAHAMSTOWN - JAZZ (article first published : 1999-06-27)

The Millennium Quadrant SA, is a collaboration of jazz artists from South Africa and the Netherlands. United in a love of jazz and free from political and cultural boundaries, this combination of players is sure to get Grahamstown movin’ and groovin’ at the 1999 Standard Bank National Arts Festival.

Quadrant is a mix of highlife, free jazz and world-music as well as African and European improvised music and has received the co-operation of many renowned international artists. After a successful tour through the Netherlands last year (and contracts for three CDs!), the eight primary musicians meet again to explore diverse styles and create a matchless musical blend.

The line-up for the Festival includes South African musos Feya Faku (trumpet and flügelhorn), Louis Mhlanga (guitar) and Jasper Cook (trombone) as well as Netherlands musicians Meter Erker (saxophone and bass clarinet), Erwin Vann (tenor and soprano saxophone), Jeroen van Vliet (piano), Hans van Oosterhout (drums) and Eric van der Westen (double bass).

Individually the musicians play with a unique talent and diversity found in the most proficient of solo players. Together they unite to form a magical musical melting pot.
