BIRDY (article first published : 2000-07-5)

The much acclaimed presentation by Venture Capital of the celebrated play Birdy based on the timeless novel by William Wharton adapted for the stage by playwright Naomi Wallace is a highlight on the Fringe at this year's Standard Bank Festival of the Arts in Grahamstown.

Director Joshua Lindberg has assembled a strong cast featuring Michael Richard, Nic Boraine, Anthony Coleman, Jose Domingos, Langley Kirkwood and Rob van Vuuren. Set design is by Joshua Lindberg with lighting by Wesley France and music by Janine Neethling.

Birdy is a heroic tale of friendship and war about the process boys are forced to go through in order to become acceptable men in society. It promises the searing emotional intensity of Equus. The novel Birdy was written in the later part of the 70's by author William Wharton and in the early 1980's, Alan Parker made into a movie starring Matthew Modine and Nicholas Cage.

Poet and playwright Naomi Wallace hails from Kentucky, USA and her adaptation of Birdy was first presented at the Drum Theatre, Plymouth, and transferred to the West End in 1997 starring Rob Morrow and Adam Garcia. This South African production is the first outside the United Kingdom.

Book at Computicket. Performances at 10h00 and 21h30 at St Andrews Drill Hall on July 5, 6, 7 and 8.
