CRESTFEST CHILDRENíS ART FESTIVAL 2008 (article first published : 2008-06-25)

The Hillcrest Christian Academy's Children's Arts Festival on June 25 offers a wide variety of workshops and entertainment. The festival opens with a free performance by the East Rand Youth Orchestra in the Hillcrest Christian Fellowship Auditorium, Inanda Road, at 09h00. Thereafter, workshops, a schools showcase, art exhibition, arts stalls, etc. are on offer.

The highlight of the day will be Andrew Young in Concert in the auditorium at 18h30. This is a show not to be missed, featuring members of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra backing world-renowned top saxophonist Andrew Young and his band under the baton of Ian Holloway. Tickets R50 (R30 pensioners) available at Hillcrest Christian Academy and Hillcrest Kwikspar. Supervised children under 13 free, in order to allow families to attend this event. (Tickets also available from Computicket at R55 and R35).

Among the workshops on offer are:

African Bead & Wire: Israel Kutsuwa from Dungbeetle Art will teach the basics of the art and participants will create a beaded work to take home. All materials provided. Workshops times: 10h30 to 12h30 for Grade 5 to adult (R100).

Bead Jewellery: Jaistri Lazarus will teach how to make basic bead jewellery. Two workshops: from 10h30 - 11h30 for Grades 1 to 4; and again from 11h30 to 12h30 for Grade 5 to adult (R50).

Drama: Gillian & Andrea from Rising Star Academy will present improvisational workshops: from 10h30 to 11h30 for Grades 1 to 4; and again from 11h30 - 12h30 for Grade 5 and up (R50).

Wooden Puppet Making: Tinks Fowler will teach children how to make wooden puppets and moulded head from clay from 10h30 to 12h30 for Grades 5 and up (R75, all materials included).

Clowning: Clowns without Borders present "Run away & join the circus!" with juggling, stiltwalking, even flying! from 10h30 to 12h00 for all ages (R100). The workshop will be open to public view from 12h00 to 12h30.

Violin: Lil Fowles will introduce youngsters to this beautiful instrument from 10h30 to 12h30 for Grades 5 and up (R60)

Contemporary Dance: acclaimed choreographer Musa Hlatswayo, director of Mahyise Production Company, presents a beginner's workshop exploring the basics of this expressive art form from 10h30 to 12h00 for Grades 4 and up (R100). This workshop will be open to public view from 12h00 to 12h30.

There is a strong emphasis on drums with Vicky Goddard (Drum Building) will demonstrate how to make a drum and play it from 10h30 to 12h30 for Grades 4 and up (R100 - includes supply of materials - see www.rhythmania.co.za). Bryan Clarke from the Steel Drum Foundation will introduce the marvellous steel drum which is fun to play in two workshops for all ages from 10h30 to 11h30, and again from 11h30 to 12h30 (R60). A Talking Drums: Interactive Djembe drum session takes place from 11h30 to 12h30 for Grades 1 to 4 (R10) as well as a Drum & percussive toy session from 12h00 to 12h45 for Grades 5 to 7 and from 14h00 to 15h00 for adults (R50).

Ballooning with a Gospel Message, Painting and Mosaic workshops are fully booked.
