BUCKLAND & PEARSON AT THE HEX (article first published : 2008-03-12)

This weekend, the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg will host a Theatre Minifest which features performances by Andrew Buckland and Ellis Pearson.

Blackout featuring Ellis Pearson is a brand new madcap adventure for youngsters of all ages from 6 - 96!! Join Doughnut and Jock in a madcap adventure to help save our planet from a lunatic with the power to switch off the sun ... forever. Ellis Pearson takes a unique, seriously thought-provoking, yet highly entertaining look at the global warming crisis.

Ellis has created a theatre epic to rival Lord of the Rings” – parts I, II AND III! It is a gigantic battle between good and evil. The arch villain has done what no-one else has dared to do. He has stolen the sun and now holds the world to ransom. Can the unlikely heroes rise to the occasion and help to bring back the light? Performances on March 15 at 10h30 and 16h30.

Is it possible to survive and indeed thrive in a land ravaged by war, famine and years of humanity's capacity for cruelty and fear? Andrew Buckland appears in Voetsek! which tells a story of hope and humour amidst the horrors of a battle field. In a landscape of unthinkable and unspeakable cruelty and fear, a woman demonstrates the possibility of redemption and of love and hope for survival despite our worst excesses.

Gogo Voetsek, constantly on the move, carries an impossible and mysterious load, as well as an irrepressible sense of humour, a bucketful of streetwise guile and a vicious shin kick when called upon to defend herself. With typically serious humour and a uniquely physical performance style, Andrew Buckland takes the audience on a fantastical journey fuelled by an intense love of storytelling, a fascination for the magic of the theatrical experience and awe at the complexity and terrifying beauty of humanity. Performances on March 15 at 18h00 and March 16 at 18h30.

Both shows are part of the Hexagon’s Theatre Minifest. Tickets R40 per person per show booked on 033 260 5537 or e-mail: hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
