UMDWEBO’S OPEN AIR DRIVE-IN (article first published : 2007-10-16)

The days of drive-ins, candy-floss, popcorn, hot-dogs, waitresses on roller skates and classic dance musicals like Saturday Night Fever and Dirty Dancing will be revisited in a nostalgic trip down memory lane at the Open Air Drive-In at the Umdwebo Lifestyle Festival on November 10.

Presented by Umdwebo in conjunction with the Palm Lakes Estate, the Open-Air Drive-In takes place in the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito which will be transformed into a classic setting, with the smell of freshly popped popcorn wafting through the air.

“We have chosen these particular movies because one represents the heyday of drive-in movie-going in the seventies in America and the other the heyday of drive-ins in South Africa. It is also the 20th anniversary of the release of Dirty Dancing and the 30th anniversary of the release of Saturday Night Fever, says Henk Swanepoel, convener of the Umdwebo Festival.

The screening of family orientated dance-themed movies is aimed to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere that truly represents the mindset and the fantastic family lifestyle of those who live in the Dolphin Coast.

“The event has been designed to include the whole family, and these are the kind of family values strived for at Palm Lake Estates,” says Wim Sak of Palm Lake Estates.

The various restaurants at the Lifestyle Centre will be set up as a street café alongside the parking area, offering a variety of dining options. The movies will be screened on a massive screen, and guests will be able to tune the soundtrack in on their radios, just like in the old days!

The gates open at 20h00 on November 10. More information at www.umdwebo.co.za or phone 032 946 0474. All tickets for Umdwebo available at Computicket.
