AWESOME AFRICA 2007 (article first published : 2007-09-26)

Only a few days to go until the biggest World Music Festival in Africa graces the shores of Midmar Dam on September 29 and 30 with an Awesome Africa Midlands Music Festival and a line up that is a feast for music lovers.

Some 12 international acts and 30 local artists will perform on two stages over the weekend. Headline acts are from Brazil, France, Brazil, Holland and the States which compliment the immensely talented names that come from the African continent.

L’Volvo who was due to play on Saturday, has withdrawn due to injuries occurred in a car accident but is replaced by two local DJ’s who are well-known on the circuit. DJ Character T-Zozo en Professor (stet) will certainly get the crowd going with their blend of tunes on the mixers. Proving not to disappoint, they are a competent replacement for the talented L’Volvo.

Having been an indoor venue for the last four years, Awesome Africa Midlands Music Festival will rejoice at being outdoors again. Activities will be on offer for children with jumping castles, clowns, balloons and face painting to keep the little people entertained. For the whole family there is Midmar Dam itself which offers a range of activities from swimming and water sports to sunbathing or just taking a breather in between acts.

There will be TV screens for those who want to have a break from the music and watch the all-important soccer or rugby games that will be screened live. Braai areas will be available. There will be meat and food stalls at the venue, as will a cash ATM machine.

Saturday’s line up is: Abaji (France / Lebanon); Amanda Gwala; Andy Narell (USA); Davy Sicard (Reunion); DDT feat Dan Sheldon; DJ’s from Gagasi fm; DJ Character K-Zozo en Professor; Deborah Fraser; Glen Bo’s Comedy Club; Indian Maestros (India); Kantharuby Dance Academy; Kech Sanchez & PAN Latino; Lok’shin Jams; N’Faly Kouyate (Guinea); Napalma (Brazil); Nibs Van Der Spuy & Guy Buttery; Ressala Band (Egypt); Rootsriders “A Tribute to Bob Marley” (Holland); Siphokazi; Wonderboom; Zola
