CRUDA BELLEZZA (article first published : 2007-08-6)

Under the leadership of Tiziana Arnaboldi, the Swiss dance company Teatrodanza will present Cruda Bellezza on the programme of the 2007 Jomba! Contemporary Dance Experience

The choreography tells the true story of performer Isabel Lunkembisa, who fled from war-torn Angola as a young girl to finding refuge in Switzerland.

All alone on stage, Isabel starts to tell her story, which is both difficult and joyous, using the art expressions that she has made her own: Hip Hop and Afro dance. Other performers take to the stage and open a dialogue, using their individual bodies and dance techniques against the backdrop of a video created for Cruda Bellezza by award-winning Algerian director, Mohammed Soudani.

Dancer, choreographer and director Tiziana Arnaboldi was born in Locarno (Switzerland) in 1956. After studying physical education, she worked with Rey Phillips in Zurich, Carolyn Carlson in Paris, and Pina Bausch in Essen, Germany, before founding Teatrodanza Tiziana Arnaboldi in 1987.

With Cruda Bellezza, the company has marked an important artistic breakthrough, using new choreographic and theatrical developments. These have received critical acclaim from the public as well as in the media. Over the years the Company and choreographic work of Tiziana has been affirmed as one of the most interesting within Swiss contemporary dance. Working with the individual specialities and peculiarities of the company’s interpreters, Tiziana Arnaboldi has developed her own language of “teatrodanza”, in which the strength of gesture melts with the lightness of poetry.

Cruda Bellezza can be seen on August 30 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at 19h30. Book at Computicket.
