WHITE MOUNTAIN FOLK FESTIVAL (article first published : 2007-07-23)

For three days of great music in an idyllic setting, don’t miss the second White Mountain Folk Festival, which takes place over the Heritage Day long weekend from September 21 to 24 in the scenic Central Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal.

English folk-rock legends Magna Carta have been confirmed as the featured act. Returning to South Africa for the first time in 30 years, this world-renowned group will join a number of top local artists for three days of unforgettable acoustic music in one of the most idyllic spots in the Drakensberg. The festival is held at White Mountain Lodge in the foothills of the Giant's Castle Nature Reserve, just 200km from Durban and 430km from Johannesburg on tarred roads.

Already confirmed for what promises to be an awesome line-up are acts like Dan Patlansky, Farryl Purkiss, Southern Gypsey Queen, Sitter, Roly Struckmeyer and Baz Corden. The full programme is still being finalised and will be announced shortly.

“Our aim is to build on the success of last year’s festival, with an even stronger focus on acoustic music – ranging from blues to rock and, of course, folk,” says event organiser, Pedro Carlo of C-Weed Entertainment Promotions, who also manages the very successful Splashy Fen Music Festival.

He adds that, aside from the music, White Mountain also offers fun outdoor activities for the whole family, arts and crafts, a ‘beer market’, assorted food stalls, various accommodation options and all the necessary amenities to make the festival as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Tickets on sale at selected Game stores in KZN (R250) and Computicket (R300) and will also be available at the festival gate (R350). The price includes camping facilities for the entire long weekend. Children under 12 pay R50.

In addition to the general festival camping area, there’s also the option of hassle-free camping in the new ‘tent hotel’, which comes at an affordable bed-and-breakfast rate and offers spacious two-sleeper tents complete with mattresses and linen.

Alternatively, there’s a caravan park where campers and caravanners can enjoy their own electricity points, separate ablution blocks and full use of the lodge's facilities for a nominal extra fee. To make a booking, call 036 353 3437. Unfortunately, the chalet accommodation is already fully booked.
