GRAHAMSTOWN WEARABLE ART (article first published : 1999-06-27)

The splendid finery of gold, the appealing quirkiness of kitsch and the innovative use of found objects and funky materials are combined in an exhibition entitled Low Lustre - High Art: Goldsmithing Today, on display at the 1999 Standard Bank National Arts Festival.

There has been a relatively long tradition of studio jewellery in South Africa and the number of goldsmiths who produce work of this nature is steadily growing. This exhibition aims to inform people of the concepts underpinning this type of jewellery and the work on show is of a spontaneous, fresh, daring and playful nature. Often non-precious materials such as latex and resin are used but traditional materials - silver, copper, brass, gold, precious and semi-precious stones - are also worked in the typical goldsmithing manner.

Among the 24 participants who will each submit between three and five works are Errico Cassar, Jacqueline Lloyd, Carine Terrblanche, Carin Stuart, Chantal Mayer and Lilly Friedlaender. Most of the exhibitors are self-employed and live in the Cape, producing individual pieces for galleries and selective clients.

Apart from jewellery pieces the exhibition includes a linking photographic display and continual slide show. The exhibition is curated by Errico Cassar, Carine Terrblanche and Marion Arnold.
