VAGINA MONOLOGUES (article first published : 2004-01-26)

The much-talked about and highly-acclaimed production of The Vagina Monologues will come to the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre for six performances only from March 16 to 20.

This international smash hit is written by Eve Ensler and directed by Dawn Lindberg and features an array of actresses from stage and screen: Rosie Motene, Rachel Tambo, Tselane Tambo, Nqobile Simpamla and Dawn Lindberg herself.

The Durban season will be the last leg of a highly-successful national tour which kicked off at the National Festival of the Arts in Grahamstown last July and has subsequently had seasons in Bloemfontein and Johannesburg.

In The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler has given voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, brave, highly original and thoroughly human stories. Based on over 200 interviews with a diverse group of women from around the globe, the play explores the humour, power, pain, wisdom, outrage, mystery and excitement hidden in vaginas.

“Having seen The Vagina Monologues no one – woman or man – will look at the world the same way again,” smiles Dawn Lindberg – the force behind the South African tour of the production. Dawn was invited to be part of the first V-Day celebrations to stop Violence Against Women in 2001. Author Eve Ensler flew out from the USA to be there and was so impressed by Dawn and the cast that she granted the rights for the production to be staged here. Dawn was the director of the second South African V-Day held at the State Theatre in Pretoria in March 2003 which starred 50 of South African’s top women celebrities. Significantly exactly one year later the production opens in Durban.

The Vagina Monologues has been the subject of much controversy in South Africa and indeed around the world. The show doesn’t seek to titillate but rather empower and educate. It does not contain nudity or engage in graphic account of sexual behaviour. It does not promote promiscuous sexual behaviour but rather seeks to present a rounded and poignant view into the mystery of womanhood.

Performances of The Vagina Monologues from March 16 to 20 March are Tuesday to Friday at 20h00 with two shows on Saturday 20 at 18h00 and 20h30. Tickets R75. Book at Computicket or for credit cards on 011 340 8000.
