ONE ACT PLAY FESTIVAL (article first published : 2000-01-2)

Amfest, traditionally run as a one-act play festival in various venues over the last 20 years, will celebrate its 21st anniversary this year by presenting a multi-faceted non professional arts festival. This will be held in the University of the Witwatersrand theatre complex in Johannesburg from July 31 to August 19, with a final gala performance and awards ceremony embracing all categories.

The Amfest 2000 One Act Play Festival will be the only basic competitive part of the festival. Any properly constituted theatrical group can enter a one-act play in English or Afrikaans only (regrettably due to adjudication restraints) with a minimum of two actors. The production must run between 20 to 45 minutes with sets kept to a minimum for storage purposes. New South African plays are encouraged. Initial applications must be in by February 29 and will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis as only 15 plays can be catered for. Costs R250 per play, plus optional R100 fee to join Amfest (non-members will pay R450). Details from Odelle Taylorson on (011) 640-6221.

A new category for Amfest 2000 is that of solo theatre performances of between 20 to 45 minutes. All languages will be catered for and two copies of the script must be submitted together with proof of payment of rights. Sets to be kept to a minimum and initial entries must be in by February 29. Costs R75 per entry, plus optional R100 fee to join Amfest (non-members R100). Details from Roy Wilkinson on (011) 679 1052.

For general enquiries and applications for Amfest 2000, the main contact is Noel Mcdonald on (011) 636-936 or (011) 475-584. Application forms can be found on the artslink.co.za website at http://www.artslink.co.za/amfest, under Amfest 2000.
