ACTORS CO-OP NEWS (article first published : 2004-01-1)

The Actors Co-operative is in preparation for a very busy first season of 2004.

The first production of the new year, Othello, is well into the home stretch. It stars T-bone Hlahane in the title role, alongside Durban Theatre Awards best actress Clare Mortimer and seasoned actor Frantz Dobrowsky. The play will be directed by Garth Anderson, who has been responsible for the Actors Co-op's last four Shakespeares.

This most hard-hitting of the Bard's tragedies opens at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on February 9, where it will will play an already packed three-week season before transferring to the Hilton College Theatre, the Empangeni Civic Centre and finally the DIT's Courtyard Theatre. The run ends on March 19. Schools interested in booking for the play, this year's Matric setwork, should contact Margie Coppen on 083 251 9412.

After a well-supported December season, Brer Rabbit And Friends provides end-of-holidays relief for stressed-out mums by playing a final week, this time in the delightful open-air setting of the Durban Botanic Gardens. The Co-op will present five performances only of this very funny comedy for children 12 and under, from January 12 to 16 daily at 11h00. Bring rugs, deck chairs, beach umbrellas and mosquito spray, park on the Sydenham Road side of the Gardens and follow the arrows to the performance space. And don't forget to collect the colouring-in competition from the Garden Gates. Competed entries stand a chance of winning prizes at each performance. Advance bookings for Brer Rabbit And Friends can be phoned in to the Co-op on 031 462 0566 and 083 439 1532.

While performing Othello, the Co-op will also be busy rehearsing its adaptation of IEB setwork Atonement. This follows the immense success of the Co-op's adaptation of J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace which was seen by IEB schools across Gauteng and KZN in 2002 and 2003. Atonement will be available to tour at the end of March. Interested schools should contact Actors Co-op artistic director Garth Anderson on 031 462 0566 or on 083 429 1532.
