UNCUT – THE PENIS MONOLOGUES (NEW VERSION) (article first published : 2003-12-13)

Uncut – The Penis Monologues, featuring Clinton Marius and directed by Garth Anderson, was first presented at the Square Space Theatre earlier this year. While the show provided much interest and played to good houses, it was too long and needed some judicial pruning.

Garth and Clinton have reassessed the piece and taken out a number of sketches including a fairly lengthy and graphic item which dealt with penis enlargement. Other pieces have been shortened and the show now runs at a comfortable 70 minutes in the Catalina Theatre at Wilson’s Wharf.

Uncut is Clinton’s pithy and entertaining response to its controversial female counterpart, the much-vaunted The Vagina Monologues. With his underplayed style and occasional impish grins he takes a look at male sexuality - and what being a man means in the 21st century.

The following is an extract from my initial review:

“With manhood firmly “tucked away”, he becomes a rather prissy trim female in designer gear halfheartedly doing her bit at the gym. One of the most insightful sketches deals with a young couple driving home after a party while the most enjoyable is undoubtedly the one in which he parodies My Sweet Embracable You with an inflatable doll.

Amidst the humour, he asks the relevant question – by continuing to focus on abuse to women and children, isn’t the subject being polarised? Is violence to women more important than violence to men and boys? Wouldn’t it be better to include menfolk in the debate and try to work out why abuse occurs in the first place?”

And, as I said the first time round: “Be warned – the material is very much adult and not for those who are sensitive to graphic discussion on a vital part of the male anatomy!”

Plans in hand for the new year are to take the production to Gauteng, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Presented by Copy Dog, Uncut – The Penis Monologues runs at the Catalina Theatre from December 12 to 28. Performances Wednesdays to Saturdays at 10h30 (Sundays at 20h30). Tickets R50. The Sublime cocktail bar on the Wharf deck offers pre-performance liqueur cocktails at R12 with such titles as Horning Tom Cat, Mermaid’s Multiple Orgasm and Sublime Fantasy. Ticket bookings on 031 305 6889. – Caroline Smart

Please note: For adults only, the production includes nudity and graphic language and is not for the faint-hearted.
