DURBAN THEATRE AWARDS (article first published : 2003-11-30)

For many years, the Durban Theatre Awards were presented by Vita Promotions, sponsored by First National Bank and known as the FNB Vita Awards. However, FNB pulled out of the theatre awards system and Vita Promotions indicated to the regions that they should find their own sponsorship.

Despite the lack of a formal structure, former KZN Vita judges and representative Peter Taylor have honoured their original commitment to see the productions featured in the 2002/2003 through to final award status.

The best theatrical talent of the past year will therefore still be acknowledged for their excellence. Unfortunately they will not receive cash prizes (unless a kind sponsor is forthcoming!) but they will be presented with an award certificate.

Drawing on the success of the Anthony Stonier Benefit when productions gave freely of their time with the added benefit of publicising their shows, it has been decided that the Durban Theatre Awards ceremony will follow the same format. Very Very Big Productions have generously offered one of their free nights in the run of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The date has been sent for December 15 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and the evening will be glitzy, sophisticated and glamorous. As Monday night is a “night-off” for most productions in Durban, audiences can expect to brush shoulders with who’s who on the Durban theatre scene.

The evening will be hosted by East Coast Radio personalities Jane Linley and Mel Massyn. Watch this space for details of time, ticket prices etc.
