THE BOY WITH A CLOWN’S HEART (article first published : 2003-11-23)

Aldo Brincat’s delightful new work, The Boy with a Clown’s Heart will run at the Catalina Theatre on Wilson’s Warf over the festive season.

The stage production pools the mime and acting talents of Aldo Brincat (CaveBrats) together with the music and sound innovations of Anton Cawthorn-Blazeby (Landscape Prayers), all under the creative and zany direction of David Gouldie (Fantastic Flying Fish).

The Boy with a Clown’s Heart is a tender yet contemporary story about a dull man who crosses paths with a mysterious tiny (really tiny) little boy. This demanding, pushy and rude youngster drives the man to the edge with his constant questions and enquiries about life, while the stubborn man, set in his ways, exasperates the little boy at every turn. It’s a bit like Tom Thumb meets Bart Simpson meets Grumpy Old Men, all on the way to self discovery!

This miss-matched pair takes audiences on a journey of that includes unusual magic, classical mime, and movement, with Anton performing a unique soundtrack.

“We wanted to create a play that would touch both parents and children alike,” says Aldo Brincat. We also wanted a play that uses the vocabulary that theatre has to offer, as opposed to simply watching a movie. I hope audiences will be drawn in and amazed at this sensorial onslaught and at the skills on display in this production.

“We are all very excited to return to a more physical approach to stage work and since we all approach storytelling from such different perspectives, pooling our talents is bound to produce a unique and enchanting show. I hope audiences will be delighted by what they see.”

The show is suitable for young and old and performances take place daily at 09h00.

The Boy with a Clown’s Heart opens on December 6 and runs from Tuesdays to Sundays. Tickets R25 throughout. Bookings through The Catalina Theatre on 031 305 6889
