HANSEL AND GRETEL (article first published : 1999-12-17)

The magical fairy tale Hansel and Gretel will be presented by the highly talented and acclaimed Andrew Godbold at the Animal Farm during the December School Holidays. The show opens on December 15 and will run through to early January. The well-known story is enacted by marionettes in a newly built marionette theatre that forms part of the Animal Farm's recent renovations.

Hansel and Gretel tells the story of two children abandoned by their evil stepmother in the forest, who find their way to a wicked witch's house made of sweets and biscuits and all things nice. The witch tries to fatten the children up for her next meal - but as in all good fairy tales, the children outwit her in the end and live happily ever after. Not only does he control the puppets, but Andrew has designed and created the enchanting set of marionette puppets for the 30-or-so minute show which is aimed at children aged from about 4 to 10. The sound track includes specially composed music by Godbold and the voice talents of Mim Erasmus and Bruce Bennett.

Andrew's most recent success The Milkbird was shown at the Hilton Arts Festival and at the Botanic Gardens and played to full houses for the entire run. He also had a very successful tour in Prague earlier in the year with his puppet shows. Tickets are R10 (R8 children) and the first performance on December 15 is at 11h00. Tickets for this performance and the one on December 24 will be R4 and R5 respectively. Performances Tuesdays to Sundays at 11h00 and 14h00. Tickets available at the door but the venue only seats about 60 so advance booking is advisable. Phone Andrew on (031) 312-0825 or 083 737-6414.
