RUGGA BUGGERS (article first published : 2003-11-21)

Rugga Buggers is a fun experimental piece written & performed by Thomie Holtzhausen and offered as booby-prize to all South African rugby supporters. Directed by well-known Peter Court, this short one-man comedy looks at our rugby fanatic rainbow nation and its various characters.

New lyrics to a few well-known songs link the characters and in the words of the actor: “It didn’t look as if the Bokke can play rugby, so I thought – if they can’t play rugby, surely I can go on stage as a singer – although I cannot really sing!”

Characters range from the Lecturer teaching the audience to become true supporters of the game to a reverend who found the world cup results being predicted in the Afrikaans folk song Sarie Marais. They reveal a little more than normal of the people “behind” the supporters of the game.

Mixed with spicy English and Afrikaans, Rugga Buggers is a work in progress aimed at making people laugh. The show runs from Sundays to Wednesdays at The Lab on Florida until December 10 (extended). Tickets available at the door or by phoning Ian on 031 201 7885 or 082 652 4081.

The Lab is situated next to Spiga D’Oro’s through the alleyway connecting the two buildings and opposite the entrance to Roman Lounge.
