ASHWIN SINGH PLAY (article first published : 2003-10-26)

Five new South African plays have been selected for the second PANSA Festival of Reading of New Writing that will take place at the Intimate Theatre on the University of Cape Town’s Hiddingh Campus from November 14 to 16.

Some 27 entries were received for the Festival from which five were selected from around the country. They include Ashwin Singh of Durban for his work To House. Other finalists are Cape Town’s Allan Glogauer, Mike van Graan and Dr Guy Willoughby and Gauteng’s Renos Spanoudes.

The aims of the Festival - sponsored by the Royal Netherlands Embassy and staged in association with the UCT Drama Department- are to generate original South African theatre works, to provide a platform for these works to reach the attention of theatre producers, and to select at least one work for a full scale professional production to be staged at a national festival. PANSA is also exploring a further possibility with the winning writer having a residency in an international context.

During the weekend festival, these five plays will be read by professional actors, and each reading will be followed by a discussion about the play, dialogue with the writer, and feedback from the judges. The judges and the audience members who attend all five readings will vote for the play they think has the most potential for a professional production.

The public is welcome to attend the play readings and discussions. A programme will be available shortly, watch press for details. Contact Tammy Ballantyne on 011 880 5486 or e-mail pansa@artslink.co.za or phone Barbara Mathers on 082 372 9869.
