JUST THE TICKET (article first published : 2003-10-25)

Radio Today presents a radio adaptation of Just the Ticket by Percy Tucker on his 50 plus years in South African theatre on Sundays at 18h00 (repeated Thursdays at 11h30).

This week's chapter highlights all the events of 1964.

South Africa's youngest impresario Pieter Toerien, brings British pianist Russ Conway on a tour of SA. Joan Brickhill tells the story of the Brickhill-Burke production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Alexander Theatre to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Shakespeare's birth.

The production of Arthur Miller's After the Fall directed by Leonard Schach at the University Great Hall marked the end on a era in SA theatre, as this was the last time Leon Gluckman would act in the country of his birth. He starred in the play as Quentin opposite Erica Rogers as Maggie.

Anna Quayle, who starred in both the West-End and Broadway productions of Stop the World - I Want to Get Off arrives in Johannesburg to play opposite Michael McGovern in the Alexander Theatre's production of this hit musical.

Elaine Perry, (whose mother was Antoinette Perry, after whom the Tony Awards are named), came to SA from New York to direct the Broadway comedy Never Too Late. In the cast was a young leading man James Kikwood, who later won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for his co-authorship of the record breaking musical A Chorus Line.

The sad death of British comedy star Vic Oliver in the dressing room of the Brooke Theatre during a performance of Distinguished Gathering. The sensation caused by 12 year old pianist Marion Friedman in concerts all over the country. The visit of Vera Lynn ... the Forces Sweetheart! The audience who had given her a standing ovation of 10 minutes before the performance, did not let leave the Civic Theatre stage until 02h00!

Anthony Farmer tells the story of the wayward revolve in his lavish production for JODS of The Merry Widow. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with an all USA cast was the Xmas attraction at the Civic.

Listen to the saga of how Dusty Springfield was deported back to the UK after her baiting the Prime Minister, Dr Verwoerd. This resulted in the closing of the last of the multi racial venues for the next 14 years.
