CRY THE BELOVED COUNTRY (article first published : 2003-10-16)

This year sees the centenary of the birth of author Alan Paton on January 11, 1903, in Pietermaritzburg. He went to school and university there, returning at one point to teach at his old school, Maritzburg College. He remained loyal to his hometown all his life, most of which he lived in Kwazulu-Natal.

He celebrated the beauties of the province most vividly in his masterpiece, Cry, The Beloved Country. This novel will be seen for the first time in KZN as a professional stage play.when Roy Sargeant Productions in association with Artscape brings the play to the Hilton College Theatre from October 6 to 11.

The story of the noble, simple Zulu Anglican priest who travels from KZNís southern rural area to the city of Johannesburg in search of his son has been adapted for the stage by Roy Sargeant. It is directed by Heinrich Reisenhofer and designed by Peter Cazalet with lighting by Kobus Rossouw.

Heading the cast will be well-known Johannesburg actor Joko Scott as Stephen Khumalo and Capetonian David Muller as the farmer James Jarvis.

Others in the company are Nhanhla Mavundla, Roger Dwyer, Chris Gxalaba, Thobeka Maqhutyana, Matthew Wild, Morena Medi, Adrienne Pearce, Leon Liebenberg, Nkuli Sibeko and Johan Vermaak.

This profoundly moving story of South Africa, Cry, The Beloved Country will be staged at Hilton for both the general public and school learners.
