AUDITION FOR HITS (article first published : 2003-10-8)

Highway Intimate Theatre's next supper theatre show is Party Piece, a comedy by Richard Harris. Auditions will be held on October 6 at 19h30 for 20h00 in the Pinetown Library Functions Room, corner of Old Main Road and Crompton Street, Pinetown.

The cast calls for three men and four women as follows: Mrs. Hinson (late 60ís), a working class widow who a mixture of pure gristle and animal cunning; Michael Smethurst (30ís/40ís), an extremely neat doctor who takes himself very seriously, and his wife Roma Smethurst (same age group) but she is short, with a weight problem, and always very keen to please her husband.

Then thereís David Hinson (40ís) who is well built but seemingly placid, balancing his genuine concerns for his elderly mother with her dislike for his new wife Jennifer (a little younger than David) and the antagonism between mother and daughter in law is mutual. There are two smaller parts: Toby Hancock: a friend of Michael, tall, slim and looking for a little action, and Sandy Lloyd Ė Meredith (30ís) who is extravagant in every way, dressing to show off her ample curves.

The play is set on the night of Michael and Roma's housewarming party. The evening looks set to be a lively one until a string of hilarious disasters strike, including a distinct lack of guests, a burning garden shed, a marauding Zimmer frame and the prospect of an irate husband on the prowl. Michael and Roma's patience is further tried by the arrival of their neighbours, the indomitable Mrs. Hinson, who brings her own brand of party entertainment in the form of the domestic squabbles of her son and daughter in law. This is a very funny play set in the back gardens of the feuding neighbours. The essence of the humour lies in the delightful characterisation.

The production will be staged over three weekends from November 21 to December 7. Rehearsals from October13 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Also required are backstage crew, set builders, front of house helpers etc. etc.,

Those interested in taking part should contact Clare on 031 767 0244, or e-mail clare@eagleenv.co.za

Highway Intimate Theatre is a very active group. It is an amateur organisation in the sense that performers do not get paid.
