DEFENDING THE CAVEBRATS! (article first published : 2003-09-24)

After taking the Johannesburg stage by storm with his smash hit comedy, Defending the CaveBrats which premiered at the Playhouse in February, Aldo Brincat returns to Durban with this latest brainchild of his distinguished career to play the Catalina Theatre at Wilson’s Wharf from October 7.

On a winning streak following the runaway success of his previous stage productions, the award-winning King Kong and The House Husband, Brincat has met with numerous accolades and audience support during his season at the Liberty Theatre on the Square in Sandton.

Taking his cue from the smash hit Defending the Caveman, Aldo presents a fresh and hilarious take on the trials and tribulations of being a parent. Taking an incisive look at the impulses that set many couples on the path to parenthood, he serves up a unique concoction of material that is enjoyed by parents and non-parents.

In the tradition of its Caveman predecessor, Aldo’s original comedy plays with the concept of alien species who all seem to come from different planets as he scrutinizes the chasms of difference that divide beleaguered parents from their demanding offspring.

“For years, people have urged me to tackle this subject,” says Aldo, a father of two who has some 15 years of working with children behind him as an entertainer, teacher and talent scout. “I have found each stage of life offers a wealth of material to draw on, from our relationship with our babies, our teenagers, our young adult friends, to the stage when suddenly your children become your parents.”

Defending the CaveBrats! opens at the Catalina Theatre at Wilson’s Wharf on October 7 and runs until November 2. Performances Tuesdays to Saturdays at 20h00 and Sundays at 18h00. Tickets R65 (R50 pensioners and students). To book, call 031-305 6889.
