CALAMITY (article first published : 2003-09-24)

The Johannesburg-based Theatre Company; Mzini Productions presents Calamity, a comedy play to be staged in the Playhouse Theatre Loft from October 1 to 4.

Calamity is the story of a brilliant teenager who is awaiting the results of her matric exam when tragedy strikes her family. Her father; a physically-challenged community leader is killed when the bus in which he is travelling with other physically challenged friends is hijacked.

The teenager was very close to her father so she vows to avenge his death, not by the spilling of blood, but by helping to keep SA crime-free. The play also highlights the conflict among families between Christian and traditional beliefs.

The play is written and directed by well-known television actor Duma Mnembe who has been featured in various popular TV productions such as Hlala Kwabafileyo (Bheseni), Udeliwe, S’gudi S’nice, Ifa Lika Mthethwa and many more. It features a talented cast of nine performers from Johannesburg: Sbongile Ngwenya (Noxolo) the deceased wife, Busisiwe Mashiyane (Rethabie) The daughter, Thandiwe Moepye (Nthabiseng) Rethabi’s Friend, Phumzile Kubeka (Sangoma), Sandile Matsheni (Tshelete), The Uncle Petros Mhoni (Ranki), Tshelete’s Right Hand Man and Siphiwe Melo (Pastor Maphanga).

This powerful and compelling production was first performed at the Windybrow Arts Festival in March 2002. It went on to complete a successful theatre season in the Spoornet State Theatre in Pretoria in May 2002.

In 2002, the play also performed at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, Gauteng’s Ishashalazi Festival, Tshakalani Festival in Mpumalanga province and Linkfest “Eclipes” festival in Messina in Limpompo Province.

Mzini Productions acknowledges the kind support of the National Arts Council.

Calamity runs at 19h30 in the Playhouse Loft for four days only. Booking is at Computicket. For enquiries please call 031 301 3673
