PROOF (article first published : 2003-09-19)

Proof is a wonderfully funny, smart and compassionate play of ideas, which explores the “unknowability” of love as much as it does the mysteries of mathematics. KickstArt is to present this Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Auburn, directed by Greg King and starring Olivia Borgen and Clare Mortimer.

On the eve of her 25th birthday, Catherine, who has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father (Robert), must deal not only with his death but with the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire. Added to this stress are the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that Robert left behind.

As Catherine confronts Hal’s affections and Claire’s plans for her life, she struggles to solve the most perplexing problem of all: How much of her father’s madness – or genius – will she inherit?

David Auburn combines elements of mystery and surprise with old-fashioned story-telling to provide a compelling evening of theatre, which bubbles with a chemistry of its own.

Proof first appeared on Broadway in 2000, starring Mary Louise Parker, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama that year. It was subsequently produced on London’s West End starring Gwyneth Paltrow. After their successes such as Popcorn, The Memory of Water, Private Lives and Steel Magnolias, KickstArt is proud to present yet another internationally-acclaimed play especially for Durban audiences.

Proof runs at Kwasuka Theatre from September 25 to October 25. Performances Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 with Saturday matinees at 14h30. Tickets R60 (R50 for students and pensioners) at Computicket, or from Greg on 083 544 2006.

Block bookings for charities, fundraising or corporate events or social gatherings can be arranged at discounted prices. Kwasuka Theatre is an intimate, air-conditioned 112 seater auditorium with a fully licensed bar and excellent outdoor entertaining facility. It is situated at the bottom of Windermere Road, a “stone’s throw away” from Beanbag Bohemia. Call Greg to discuss booking your function on 083 544 2006.
