AT THE EDGE (article first published : 2003-08-23)

Well known for her television appearances in The Res, Leeanda Reddy appears in Ronnie Govenderís acclaimed drama At the Edge at the Playhouse. She will present dramatisations from Ronnieís Commonwealth Award-winning book which is a follow-on to his 1949. The stories come from the setwork At The Edge and Other Cato Manor Stories.

In fact, At The Edge was produced before 1949 and was the vehicle through which another TV star, Pat Pillai, rose to fame. The play was first produced in the 80ís and made such an impact that it was immediately invited to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and later to the prestigious Edinburgh Festival. The play received invitations to Toronto and Glasgow after sell-out seasons at the Baxter Theatre as well as other venues throughout South Africa.

Leeanda Reddy took over the part when Pat Pillai became a SABC newscaster. Her performance was hailed by the critics and the show was invited to tour the major cities of India by the Indian Government where audiences rewarded her with standing ovations.

This production is a must-see for learners as well as all theatre lovers. There are matinee performances on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Evening shows take place from Friday to Sunday.

At the Edge runs from August 26 to September 14 in the Playhouse Loft. Tickets R40 booked through M Sheran Batohi on 082 671 9885. More information on 031 369 9444.
